Colnago Mexico 1986
The Colnago Nuovo Mexico was introduced in 1982. Besides the Colnago Super, it's one of the most iconic models that Colnago ever built. You could say that the Colnago Super and the Nuovo Mexico don't really differ that much from each other, they use the same tubes and geometry. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Ernesto Colnago found out that crimping the tubes of a frame would stiffen up the frame without adding weight. In 1982 he applied this technique for the first time and it worked! The Nuovo Mexico was born..
I bought this bike a few years ago in Tilburg, a city close to the Belgian border, unfortunately I can no longer remember who it belonged to. The bike is in a good, used condition. It has some patina here and there, but nothing really disturbing. The chrome is still in a good condition. The fork has been rechromed. The frame itself is made out of stiff and reliable Columbus SL tubes, and has a lot of pantographes. Everything here is period-correct. Campagnolo provides the Chorus groupset and hubs. Tubular Wolber rims, a Gimondi Colnago saddle, and a pantographed Colnago stem make this bike feel truly special.
Colnago is perhaps the most iconic cycling brand that has ever existed. Almost everyone who likes cycling will mention Colnago if you ask him to name a brand. And it's not strange either, Colnago always stood out when it comes to the attention to details and fancy paint jobs. Colnago is alsno known as one of the most creative cycling manufacturers. They are responsible for innovations in design and experimentation with new and diverse materials including carbon fiber.
One of the first victories on a Colnago bike was in 1957 during the Giro. From then on there was an increased demand for frames built by Ernesto Colnago. At that point he was regarded as one of the best frame builders in Europe. Colnago grew more famous, because more and more teams and well known cyclists started working with him. The best examples are the Faema and Molteni team with leader Eddy Merckx! Colnago became an increasingly well-known brand because of their reputation and their racing wins. That lead to the brand producing more and more bicycles for the consumer market.
